Handles and Knobs, Oh My Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 10:52 pm
[info]sorcererdale
Today I think I got a couple clocks going, 3 to be exact. I think I am coming down with something, I have been blowing my nose and sneezing most of the day. I think I have been going and going and now that I have slowed down with doing things, I am getting sick. I have lots to do tomorrow, so it better wait.

I did get the knobs and handles on most of the cupboard doors, but we are short 5 knobs. We sure figured wrong, and I had the cabinet people figure too. But they were short some since it is a new style and color, brushed nickel. I also put the floor boards down where the stove goes, as that was my starting point and the hardest places to start. I just did a few as it got too dark out to be using the circular saw.

Sleepy and I had sauna tonight and Sally had to work as they had reps come in for training. She didn't have class tonight, which worked out good, but she didn't want sauna when she got home so we watched tivo. Now I am off to bed, I am really tired.

update on me~ Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 04:34 pm
[info]renichifreak
Those who know, knew that I'd been feeling really sick and all lately, so I finally went to the doctor.

So I don't have the regular flu, let alone the one of the Swine variety.

Turns out I have something off with my inner ear. It's been throwing my balance off and causing the dizzy spells and nausea. I was prescribed anti-vertigo medication as well as something for the nausea the spells were causing.

If it's still not sorted out by tomorrow, I have to go back to the doctor.

Almost 15 Gallons of Tar and Way Longer Nov. 9th, 2009 @ 11:46 pm
[info]sorcererdale
Sunday, after church I went up to Menard's and bought 3 five gallon pails of roofing tar for our thrift shop roof. Our executive director and I were the only ones that showed up, even though 3 - 4 others were going to help. At least it was easy to brush on with an 8 inch wide brush. We did all the edges where our roof joins the buildings next to it and the whole front edge with a raised buttress. What has been happening is that when it rains or the ice builds up in the winter, water was coming under the metal roofing that is up there and then dripping or pouring in on our walls and ceilings. We hope this will solve most of the problems. We do have to insulate the top ceiling on the second floor, and then ventilate the attic, but that was a 3 hour job with both of us working that is now done.

I was just exhausted when I got home and could barely move, but after sauna, I felt a lot better and I wasn't really sore this morning as I thought I might be. I guess the sauna helped.

Today was another day of oh no our house is falling apart. First, Sally's garage door wouldn't open, the electric opener just wouldn't go. I finally had to open it manually and since that isn't done very often, things were stiff and hard to do, but we finally got it so she could get to work. I later went out to figure out why it wasn't working, and after jiggling a wire it worked. So I didn't do anything else as I didn't want it to stop again.

Then I was going to do the 20 minute job of replacing the cables that lift my garage door, since it broke the other day. Well, 2 hours and 15 minutes later I finally had it done. I couldn't just slip the new cable ends onto the garage door and had to take some parts off. Then it didn't wind up right on the spools because the tension was wrong, which is really hard to do since there is so much pressure in winding the spring manually with big iron rods. Well, I finally got it, but then it didn't want to close. Some of the wood frame must have moved or something or the garage door has moved over the years and it would catch where one board met another. I will have to pound that out a bit or plane it down. But for now it works and since I am still keeping my Jeep outside as I have to clean in there before there is room. A lot of it is Christmas stuff, or things that go in our kitchen, plus a few things yet from camping this summer.

By now, I didn't have much time left to work on clocks, so I put the trim around the top of the cupboards, which was another long and "hard" job. I hate figuring out the corners of quarter round stock, but only had to re do two strips. Now it looks nice. Then this evening I laid out some of the floor boards so I can plan on how all that will fit together and still be able to fit the floor under the toe area of the counters. Actually, it is all going to fit really well and I won't have to do a lot of cutting, at least on that end of the kitchen where the sink and stove are. I have to let the floor boards adapt to the humidity and temperature inside for 48 hours, but since it was warm in the garage today, I might start some of the floor tomorrow evening.

Read the one before this, it never posted. Today's Subject Line: A List of Things Accomplished Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 11:41 pm
[info]sorcererdale
Ok, this journal is for Saturday, November 7. Some how I never clicked on the "post" button when I wrote the one before this, so scroll down and read that one first.

Saturday morning I couldn't sleep late, which I wanted to do, so I was up a little before my normal time. I did computer stuff, ate and then took the recycling to the recycling center in Gwinn. When I came home I checked that off my list. I had a whole list of things I needed to do as summer jobs or before winter comes. I just didn't get to them this summer that we didn't have as it was either rainy, we were gone, or the weather just wasn't nice. I also got the tires off our dock that are used for boat bumpers. Our dock might not make it through this winter as it is pretty crooked and some of the posts are really coming out. I was supposed to fix that this summer too, but just never had the time or the people to help me.

Then I picked up the old roofing shingles I took off the little porch roof that was leaking and that I replaced, but still had the leak. I also picked up some shingles from the summer before when I fell off the roof section to the other roof. I just never got them picked up either. I put some ladders away, picked up all the scrap wood, boards and old cabinets I took out of the kitchen from the remodeling and put them in our bon fire pit and will burn them either this year or next spring.

I also cleaned a bit in the garage; basically because I was looking for some things and found most of them. Then Sleepy and I got my Lexicon (Plexiglas) doors up on my highway sign which I was trying to do before last Christmas. I still have to buy a few parts for them and it didn't turn out the way I had it pictured, but it will work with a few additional pieces of wood and clasps. By then I was getting tired, but had one more major thing to do. Other years I have borrowed our neighbor's lawn tractor that vacuumed up the leaves, but I think he put it away already, and I just didn't have the time to do all that. So I used our mulching mower that Ryan and Lani gave us when they moved this summer (Thanks heaps for that!) and figured if they were small pieces of leaves they'd either go into the soil over the winter or blow away better. It worked quite well, but it didn't do anything to the pine needles. So next spring I will have to see what to do about that.

Then it was time to rest a bit, eat dinner and Sally and I left for our last event at the theater for this year. We had two bands, one with people we know in it, and they play the old country music. They have some humor too and always said that Johnny Cash stole their songs and here is how it is supposed to sound. They were the opening band for Chasin' Steel, supposedly a very popular local band with a big following. I guess their following wasn't told as there were only about 30 people there and some had passes from the band, while others had obtained radio coupons for them advertising for us. It was still good and we enjoyed it and so did the people who came. One guy played the hammered dulcimer the best I have ever seen. He played some songs really fast, and I mean fast. I have never seen any one play it that fast. He was excellent too. Come to find out after when I talked to him that he has been playing since he was two years old when his grandfather let him bang on an old one they found in the basement of their house. Then his grandfather told him he couldn't do that any more unless he learned a song. And he did!

Weird Electrical Things and What a Drag Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 11:20 pm
[info]sorcererdale
Friday morning I went to Escanaba to deliver a clock. All it needed was a new battery. My minimum charge is $25.00 but I only charged her $20.00. It was dropped off at the pick up point, so I didn't have to hear the customer complain. Then I dropped off a clock along the way home, but they weren't there so I left it on their porch. I emailed them and they finally emailed back and said they were on their way to Florida for the winter, but they told me they wanted to take their clock along. I figured they'd call about it before they left, but they must have forgotten to do that.

Then I stopped at the cabinet makers and picked up our "pizza cabinet" which actually is just narrow and holds pizza pans and thin cake pans, etc. When I got home I got that ready and installed it. I don't remember what I did the rest of the afternoon. Then just before Sally got home I went to read the paper and I turned on my reading light by the couch. Well, for some reason it wouldn't turn off. Our house is automated and the signals either run through the air or through the electrical wires. Well, usually if something new is plugged in like a computer or fluorescent light, that can cause interference in the signals and make things not work. The only new things I have are the lights in the kitchen, but if I turn that circuit breaker off, my light still didn't work. Sally said she finally got it to go off later in the evening.

Then after I ate I headed up to Marquette to go to NMU's OUTlook's Drag Show. This was their 13th year and we had 1,800 in attendance. But I had just driven one mile and I looked at my speedometer and saw that it was working. Then I noticed that none of my gages were working, but the dash lights were on. My cruise control wouldn't work either because that light didn't come on. Well I wanted to get there so I could be near the front of the line, but didn't want to get a ticket, either. So I remembered that my GPS shows the speed, so I hooked that up. Then for some reason, the image was the whole United States and not just the local road I was on. But after I zoomed in, then that was OK. As I got near Marquette, some sports came on the radio so I changed the station. As soon as I changed the station, all the dash lights lit up as they normally do when you first turn on your vehicle and then every thing worked, just like that!

Then I saw that the Jeep was getting low on gas and I didn't want to have to get it on the way home, so I went to get gas too. Well, all this happened for a reason, because it made my timing just perfect. I was hoping to meet up with Cris and Chip, and his mom, but didn't know how I'd find them in all the people. But as my luck turned out to be good, they were just inside the door where I came in. They introduced to me some other friends from Michigan Tech up in Houghton where they are from, and then Chris started pointing at me and talking to the people. I could see them laugh and I wondered what they were talking about as it was hard to hear with the loud music playing before the show started. They introduced me again as the REAL Dale because some the students had been calling Chris, Dale. If you think back, there used to be cartoon characters named Chip and Dale. So that's why I was the real Dale.

One of the drag queens that Chris sort of knows from them appearing at MI Tech, and Joey whom they know, walked out into the audience and happened to come down our row. Chris said to her as she went by, that he loved her. She stopped, took his glasses and put a big lip print on each lens as she kissed his glasses. He put them back on and said he felt like he was Chinese, because he could only see through where the opening of her lips were on each lens. He thought that was funny and so did we.
I called Sally after the show and she had another weird electrical thing happen. Our alarm system was beeping and she finally thought to read the panel with the screen on it. It told her that the batteries in a certain smoke detector were dead. She took the smoke detector down and finally the beeping stopped. So today I put new batteries in it. I had called Sally to tell her that I was going to the after party on the 6th floor of the Landmark Inn to hang out with some of the drag queens and other friends.

Here is one of the organizers, Joey Black. Remember these are all guys. He makes the famous cakes at the Landmark Inn

Another picture of one of the drag queens, Candi Stratton

They would all lip sync a song and dance and perform for the audience

Another drag queen. Here is another of Candi in a different dress. I guess I didn't get one of Tabitha Stevens, one of the other persons who helped get this show started 13 years ago.

This is a girl this time. She has acted at our theater and is performing here for the amateur contest

Remember this is a drag show, so here is Chip and Dale. Chip came in drag. He dressed like this to a Halloween party
and this one guy, a friend of his, kept looking for 20 minutes before he figured it out.

Here is the real Chris and Chip.

Okay. I am going to the doctor tomorrow. I am not going to suffer through sinusitis again since I have already had it this season and I am going to see about getting an allergy test to figure out which plant to burn the shit out of.

Also next Tuesday is going to be a hard choice. V or Star Trek.

We are of peace.

I found it very useful.  It compares the House Dem bill, the Senate Dem bill, and the GOP bill.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gm81TTE7a0EUL9JlzVML1dnH2N2gD9BPUITO0

The one thing that the article failed to mention, however, is that, by even discussing healthcare issues on Capitol Hill, our represented leaders are sending us on a downward spiral into SOCIALISM.

Then again, it's hard to get your hands on truthful journalism, these days.

More Plays Nov. 5th, 2009 @ 10:49 pm
[info]sorcererdale
This morning I did some clock phone calls, more theater bookkeeping and paying bills. I also wired up the outlet for the dishwasher, which was an easy task. I just had to put the wire into the circuit breaker panel and hook it up. I also painted the floor under where the dishwasher will go, since if it leaked the plywood wouldn't last too long.

I had a couple of errands to do in Gwinn and then in Marquette. Then I met Sally for dinner at Perkins. From there we went to the theater for "The Dry," a play put on with a small grant so we didn't charge admission. We did take donations and there were about 58 people there.

Oh, I also picked up our under the sink water heater, the right one this time, and when I opened it at home just a while ago, there were no directions in it. It also looked like someone had been in the box as Styrofoam was broken and parts were all over. Now I have to check with the company and see what I should have and find the directions on line.

Juli and I didn't do much for my b-day.  It's hard to do with a 9 hour shift.

She gave me Season 3 of Stargate and Season one of Babylon 5.  She also gave me a Playfirst game, which she will probably play first.  *_^

Then we went to Shari's for dinner.  I just felt like I needed a gut bomb, just to get that "I'm at a convention" feeling.  Besides, it was free pie night.

Let there be Light! Nov. 4th, 2009 @ 11:25 pm
[info]sorcererdale
Today I worked on a few different clocks, but still have to get some of them adjusted so either they run, or run better. Then I wanted to see if the electrical work I did in the sink counter area awhile ago, worked. I have been curious about that for some time and couldn't wait to try it out. I drilled the holes in the rafters of the furnace room where our electrical panel is and finished running the wires to the circuit breaker box. Then I put in the wires for the power for that area and went and checked the light for the porch, and that worked! I checked the normal outlets and they worked.

But when I checked the two GFCI's (now called ground fault circuit interrupters) they didn't work. I took them out and one didn't have the ground wire so I thought that might be it. I checked them 3 times and they had power, but they didn't work. Finally I glanced at the directions which are really long and in tiny print, and found I was supposed to run through a series of tests with the reset button and circuit tester button. Then after doing that the right way and sequence, they worked.

Now, my next step was to check the light over the sink and over the counter. You'd think that would be easy, but with our automated home I had to have special light switches and control units. For these two lights I have a dimmer module for each light which is tied into the circuit and then a special switch unit that I also programmed to the same unit and house codes as the modules and a special switch with two rocker buttons. When I tried them, they both ramped up and dimmed down to off when I hit the off button. You have to hold the button until you get the brightness you want.

Now, all I have left to wire for that side of the kitchen is the dishwasher. The outlet is in, but I just have to hook the other end into the circuit breaker panel. Well, as promised awhile ago, here are the latest pictures of the cabinets, which have been up for some time. We finally got the cabinet maker to make us what is called a pizza cabinet so that our stove will have room. No, you don't store pizzas in them, but the pans, or any other pans as it is just a 10 inch wide cabinet. Ok, Pictures are HERE.
